The last time any state executed 2 inmates in 1 day was in 2017 in Arkansas, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. 

La prima esecuzione del giorno è stata quella di James Duckett, ex agente di polizia condannato per lo stupro e l’omicidio della bambina di 11 anni Teresa Mae McAbee nel maggio 1987. 

Duckett è stato dichiarato morto alle 13:19 ET dopo un’iniezione letale di 3 farmaci nella Prigione di Stato della Florida nei pressi di Starke. 

L’esecuzione era già stata messa in calendario per marzo, e sospesa per nuovi test del DNA. I test sono risultati inconcludenti e la sospensione è stata rimossa. 

Duckett was convicted of raping and drowning 11-year-old Teresa McAbee while he was working as a police officer in central Florida in 1987.

Duckett declined to make a final statement, responding: “No, sir” when asked. About four minutes after the execution began, the prison’s warden shook Duckett and shouted his name, but there was no response.

Duckett becomes the 11th person to be put to death this year in Florida, the 136th overall since the state resumed capital punishment in 1979, the 18th person to be put to death this year in the USA, and the 1,672nd overall since the nation resumed executions in 1977. 

Florida has executed more prisoners this year than 49 other states combined.
